Trio Leads Mustangs to NCAA Second Round With Five-Set Victory Over Stockton

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Led by a combined 54 kills from senior Megan Miller and freshmen Lauren Weaver and Annika Schwartz, the Stevenson women's volleyball team defeated Richard Stockton 18-25, 26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 15-9 in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship Friday at Christopher Newport's Freeman Center.

With the win, the Mustangs (30-5) posted their fourth-straight 30-win season and remained unbeaten in five-set matches this year at 4-0 after going 3-3 over the previous two.

Schwartz and Weaver both totaled career highs in kills with Schwartz, the 2014 AVCA Mid-Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year, posting 21 and Weaver adding 19. Weaver also had just four attack errors in 42 attempts for a .357 hitting percentage.

Stevenson, who won an NCAA tournament game for the third consecutive season, totaled a season-high 69 kills. It marked the most by the team since it had 73 in a five-set win over Carnegie Mellon on Sept. 28, 2013.

For the second-straight match, the Mustangs surpassed 200 attack attempts and 100 digs, totaling 221 and 100, respectively. Over its last two matches, both five-set victories, the team has totaled 456 attack attempts and 229 digs.

Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year and AVCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team selection, senior Samantha Perillo, totaled a season-high 43 digs, surpassing 30 for the seventh time this season. Her career-high is 46, set in a five-set win at Mary Washington on Oct. 24, 2011.

Sophomore Sara Bollinger also had a career night, totaling 61 assists. She also added 10 digs while sophomore Kristen Brooks had eight kills, 18 digs and three block assists. Miller totaled four blocks and Schwartz had 14 digs.

Macy Schwartz led the Ospreys (28-7) with 15 kills, a .312 hitting percentage and seven total blocks while Lindsay Schuele had 14 kills and six total blocks. Rebecka Zabilowicz had 28 digs.

Stevenson will face host Christopher Newport on Saturday at 6:00 p.m., in the second round after the Captains swept North Eastern Athletic Conference champion Gallaudet, 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.

The last meeting between the Mustangs and Captains came at Marymount's Verizon Arena on Nov. 2, 2013 with CNU edging out a five-set victory over 20th-ranked Stevenson, 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 16-25, 15-12. Miller totaled 14 kills, seven digs and three blocks while Perillo added 18 digs.

Krista Hughes led a balanced Captain attack with 11 kills while Hannah Miller had 10 kills and six blocks. Brooke Miller and Rachel Close combined for 32 digs.
