Box Score Huntingdon, Pa. - Led by a combined 38 kills by senior Megan Miller, sophomore Kristen Brooks and freshman Annika Schwartz the Stevenson women's volleyball team posted a five-set victory over Carnegie Mellon, who is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll, Friday evening in the Wid Guisler Invitational at Memorial Gym on the campus of Juniata College.
The Mustangs (24-3) has won both five-set matches this season, defeating the Tartans 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 14-25, 15-10.
Trailing 18-22 in the first set, the Tartans (21-6) won four-straight points on two service aces by Ali Celentano. But Stevenson would win three of the final four points, including two kills by Brooks. Brooks
The second set was much like the first as the Mustangs went on a run midway through the set. However Carnegie Mellon would never match with a run of its own, stringing together no more than two points at a time.
Stevenson led the third set 12-5 at one point, but the Tartans won 14 of the next 16 points to go ahead 19-14. The Mustangs would respond with four consecutive points on two kills from Schwartz and a service ace by senior Samantha Perillo. Celentano ended the set with one of her four kills during the set.
After a back-and-forth fourth set, Carnegie Mellon won 10 of the final 14 points to force a decisive fifth set.
After dropping the first point in the fifth set, the Mustangs won six-straight to jump out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. The Tartans got as close as 10-12, but Stevenson won the final three points.
Perillo totaled 31 digs and three service aces while Miller added seven total blocks, tying her career-high. Meanwhile, sophomore Sara Bollinger finished with 47 assists and 16 digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, October 25 when the Mustangs take on two Top 25 teams in the Wid Guisler Invitational. The Mustangs open with No. 17 Eastern at 11:00 a.m. before taking on No. 10 Juniata at 5:00 p.m.
