Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball senior Alfonzo Hawkins hit a baseline jumper with 0.7 seconds remaining to break the third tie of the game, his lone made basket of the second half, as the Mustangs defeated Arcadia 80-78 in a Commonwealth Conference contest Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
After losing the first four meetings to Arcadia, the Mustangs (13-4, 8-2 MAC) have won the last two, sweeping Arcadia in the regular season. Stevenson defeated the Knights in double overtime on Dec. 7, 2013, 87-81.
A two-handed dunk by sophomore Tyrus Costley gave Stevenson its largest lead of the first half at 12-6 with 12:17 remaining.
However, three-straight three-pointers by Arcadia (6-11, 1-9 MAC), including two by Torrell Candelaria, gave the Knights a 22-20 lead with 9:18 remaining in the first half, their first lead of the game. The Knights went 6-for-9 from the three-point line in the first half and 7-for-12 for the game.
A dunk on a back door cut by Rashon Brock gave Arcadia its largest lead of the game at 26-22. Brock was assessed a Class B technical foul for hanging on the rim, but the Mustangs would miss both free throws as they converted on just 6-of-13 in the half.
Stevenson would finish the game shooting 51.9 percent from the free throw line, its second lowest output of the season.
Sophomore Christian Roberts would score eight of Stevenson's 10 points in a 2:13 span giving the Mustangs a 30-29 lead, one they would not relinquish.
Coming out of halftime, the two teams would trade baskets before the Mustangs scored seven-straight points to extend their lead to nine. Junior Colby Giacubeno gave Stevenson its first double digit lead of the game with a three-pointer at the 5:33 mark.
Three turnovers by the Mustangs in the final two minutes allowed Arcadia to tie the game at 78 with 28 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Hawkins hit the game-winning jumper from the baseline off an inbounds pass from Roberts. As was the case in the win over Messiah, junior Justin Kuntz sealed the victory with a steal on the Knights final attempt.
The Mustangs shot 51.9 percent from the floor, marking the eighth time this season the team has shot at least 50.0 percent.
Freshman Darius Walker finished with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a career-high four blocks. Kuntz added 22 points, nine rebounds, three blocks, one steal and one assist.
Joe Brown led the Knights with a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, January 29 when it hosts a Commonwealth Conference contest with Hood beginning at 8:00 p.m. The Mustangs defeated the Blazers 79-76 on Dec. 4, 2013.
