WINCHESTER, Va. - Stevenson field hockey sophomore Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) made a season-high seven saves while junior Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored twice to lead the Mustangs to a 3-0 shutout over Shenandoah Saturday at Sprint Field at Shentel Stadium.

This year marks just the second that Stevenson (3-1) has started with three wins in its first four games since 2006. The only other time was 2010 when the team started 4-1 en route to the second-most wins in school history with nine.

Just like the win over Washington (Md.) on Tuesday, the Mustangs got some revenge after losing to the Hornets a year ago, 2-0 at home on Sept. 15, 2012.

Dempsey scored the game-winner just 21 minutes into the game off an assist from junior Brooke Few (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll). The goal came on one of eight first-half shots for the Mustangs who held an 8-3 advantage in that category.

Dempsey, who totaled 10 of Stevenson's 16 shots in the game, registered her second career multi-goal game as a Mustang. It was also the ninth time she has scored at least one goal in her last 15 contests.

Stevenson increased its lead to 2-0 with 18:34 remaining in the second half when Dempsey netted her second of the game unassisted. The team would seal its third victory of the season with its third goal of the game with just over five minutes to play when senior Allyson Moody (New Windsor, Md./Westminster) scored her first of the year off a penalty corner.

Cavanaugh improved her record to 10-12 in her young career and has now won four of her last five decisions.

Sarah Clare also finished with seven saves for Shenandoah (2-1).

Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday when they travel across town to face local rival Goucher at 7:00 p.m.
