Mustangs Play Second Straight Game in Overtime, Fall to Virginia Wesleyan

ASTON, Pa. - With just 1:21 remaining in the first overtime Martha Staring scored the game-winning goal to lift Virginia Wesleyan over the Stevenson field hockey team 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Neumann University.

This was the second-straight game in as many days that the Mustangs (1-1) have played extra minutes. The team is now 3-3 in overtime games under head coach Laurel Martin.

Junior Brooke Few (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) scored her second career goal with 16:00 minutes remaining in the first half, to give Stevenson the 1-0 lead.

The Marlins (1-0) would tie the game with 10:25 remaining in the second half on a goal from Taylor Lober, before Staring would score the game-winner in overtime.

Virginia Wesleyan outshot the Mustangs 9-7, including 4-2 in the overtime period.

Sophomore Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) totaled two saves in the first half before giving way to freshman Gabriella Brooks (Bel Air, Md./Patterson Mill) who finished with five. Lisa Baker totaled six for the Marlins.

Stevenson will play their home opener on Tuesday, September 3 when they host Washington (Md.) at Mustang Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
