Mustangs Sweep Blue Jays to Advance to Second-Straight Championship

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's volleyball trio of senior Christine Isenberg, sophomore Imani Hudson and junior Megan Miller combined for 39 of the team's 52 kills as the No. 22 Mustangs swept Elizabethtown in the semifinals of the Commonwealth Conference Volleyball Championship Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22.

With the win, Stevenson (34-2) advanced to their third consecutive conference championship match and its second in as many seasons in the Commonwealth Conference. The team also extended its home winning streak to 33.

Isenberg finished with a season-high 17 kills and now has 993 in her career, leaving her just seven shy of becoming just the third player in school history to reach 1,000. She now has 309 kills this season, placing her ninth on the school's single-season list.

Meanwhile, Hudson totaled nine kills to raise her season total to 334, moving her into sixth place on the school's single-season list. Isenberg is also fifth with 335 in 2011 and fourth with 349 in 2012.

Miller totaled nine kills to go along with five digs and two service aces.

The Mustangs totaled 36 of their 52 kills in the first two sets while limiting the Blue Jays (18-16) to just 11 and a .058 hitting percentage. Isenberg, Hudson and Miller combined for 17 of the team's 20 kills in the second set while hitting .519.

Elizabethtown rallied in the third set, forcing 11 ties and three lead changes compared to just six ties and three lead changes in the first two. Abby Thrift and Juliana Mowen each had four kills while Moren added six digs.

Trailing 17-15, Stevenson closed the set with a 10-5 run, highlighted by two kills each from Isenberg, Hudson and Miller.

Senior Jessica Gieselman totaled five kills, 44 assists and eight digs and now has 1,008 for her career, making her just the fifth person in school history to surpass 1,000. She also played in a school-record 445 sets.

Senior Samantha Perillo added 12 digs and now 598 this season, two shy of her school record set a year ago.

The Mustangs will host Messiah in a rematch of last year's conference championship match on Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 2:00 p.m. Stevenson defeated the Falcons at home to win the title a year ago, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22.

Led by 17 kills and 16 digs from Isenberg and 13 kills and 15 digs from Hudson, the Mustangs defeated Messiah at Owings Mills Gymnasium back on September 19, 18-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22. The Falcons were the only team to take a set from Stevenson in nine conference matches this season.

Messiah overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to Lebanon Valley on the road to win Wednesday's other Commonwealth Conference semifinal, 17-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 15-10.
