Third Period Comeback Falls Short, Mustangs Drop a 4-2 Decision to Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass. - Back-to-back goals in the third period by the Stevenson women's ice hockey team wasn't enough to overcome three first period goals by Franklin Pierce as the host Ravens posted a 4-2 victory Saturday afternoon at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

The Mustangs (3-3-1) dropped both games this season to Franklin Pierce (5-1) after defeating them twice a season ago. All three of the teams losses this year have come on the road.

The Ravens got on the board just 5:05 into the game as a shot by Nina Danforth beat goalie Anastassia Nelson low glove side.

Lanie Matsumoto followed with a rebound in front of the net before Michaela Faia added a power play goal to give Franklin Pierce a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, freshman Stephanie Tartaglino scored her first collegiate goal, a redirect off a shot from sophomore Megan Alexander on the power-play. Sophomore Tori Emoff was also credited with an assist.

Sophomore Molly O'Neil cut the deficit to 3-2 with 4:41 left to play on a rebound in front of the goal with Alexander and Tartaglino picking up the assists.

However, just 1:18 later Francesca Paciello pushed Franklin Pierce's lead back to two.

Nelson totaled five saves in her first action of the season while Sarah Modzelewski finished with 21 in 49:50 minutes of play.

Stevenson finished 1-for-5 on the power play while the Ravens were 1-for-9. Franklin Pierce held a 30-20 advantage in shots, including 16-5 in the first period.

The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, November 30 when they travel for a two-game series agsinst St. Benedict. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
