Tracy Johnson Earns First Career Win in 4-2 Victory Over SUNY Canton

Box Score

REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Stevenson women's ice hockey sophomore Jessie Capanelli scored the game-winner with 8:03 remaining as the Mustangs scored three third-period goals, all on the power play, to rally from a 2-1 deficit en route to a 4-2 victory over SUNY Canton Saturday night at Reisterstown Sportsplex.

Stevenson (1-0) earned its first home win in two seasons at Reisterstown Sportsplex after posting an 0-7-1 record a year ago.

More importantly, the win was the first in the head coaching career of first-year head coach Tracy Johnson. A 2010 graduate of Boston College, she served as an assistant coach at Amherst during the 2011-12 season where she helped the Lord Jeffs to a 21-6-1 record and an appearance in the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Championship.

The Kangaroos (0-1), also in just their second season, took a 1-0 lead just under five minutes into the first period when Abbey Diabo scored unassisted at 4:44.

SUNY Canton held a one-goal advantage until the Mustangs tied it on the first career goal from sophomore Madison Lange off an assist from sophomore Megan Alexander at 3:56 of the second period. Lange finished tied for fourth on the team team with six assists a year ago.

The Kangaroos regained the lead just 45 seconds into the third period when Jessica Kistabish netted her first career goal unassisted on the power play.

However, Stevenson would take advantage if six SUNY Canton penalties in the period, scoring on three of four power play opportunities. Sophomore Molly O'Neil tied the game with her first of the year at 9:52 before Capanelli gave the Mustangs their first lead at 11:57.

Sophomore McKenzie Taggart, the team's leading scorer last season, capped a span of three goals in 3:11 for the Mustangs as she scored at 13:03 off a feed from O'Neil.

Capanelli earned tonight's first star while sophomore Brooke Webber, who finished with two assists, earned the second star. Diabo earned the third star for the Kangaroos.

With four goals, the Mustangs tied the school record for goals in a game for the fourth time.

Sophomore Mackenzie Bruch made 19 saves in picking up her third career victory while Shayna Dominique stopped 25 shots in her first career game.

Stevenson and SUNY Canton wrap-up their two-game series on Sunday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
