King's Scores Final 17 Points, Rallies For 31-24 Victory in Front of Sellout

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson football junior Marcus Holley (York, Pa./York County) rushed for 101 yards and one touchdown, but King's (Pa.) rallied from a 10-point third quarter deficit by scoring the game's final 17 points en route to a 31-24 victory Saturday at a sold out Mustang Stadium in front of 3,500 fans on Homecoming.

Stevenson (3-3, 2-3 MAC), who has lost three-straight and fell to 0-3 in Homecoming games, played in front of the fourth sellout crowd in the brief three-year history at Mustang Stadium. In addition to the inaugural game versus Christopher Newport on Sept. 10, 2011, all three Homecoming games have sold out since 2011.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Monarchs (3-3, 3-2 MAC) took a 14-0 lead just 22 seconds into the second after a 1-yard touchdown pass from Kyle McGrath to Jay Thomas and a 20-yard fumble return by Ron Garrett. For Garrett, it was his fifth return touchdown in as many games this season for the defensive lineman.

The Mustangs would rally, scoring the next 24 consecutive points to take a 10-point lead with 13:11 remaining in the third quarter following a 56-yard interception return by senior Tre'von Wilks (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall). The return marked the third defensive touchdown for Stevenson this season as it also has a 99 and 45-yard fumble return to its credit.

Senior Charlie Cornell (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) also had an 18-yard field as time expired in the first half to give the Mustangs their first lead, 17-14 at halftime. He remained perfect on the season and is now 6-for-6, having made at least one attempt in five of the team's six games.

Stevenson, who was held to negative 10 yards of total offensive in the opening quarter, totaled 174 in the second while limiting King's to only 22.

However, following Wilks' interception return, the Monarchs held the Mustangs to just 97 yards of total offense over the final 28 minutes while totaling 199 yards of their own, scoring 17 unanswered points and forcing two turnovers and two punts.

Sophomore John Gasparovic (Middletown, Del./Appoquinimink) made his 12th career start at quarterback Saturday, but left the game after a sack by Garrett in the first quarter. As a result, junior Zach Jefferson (Accookeek, Md./Gwynn Park) made his first career appearance under center and finished the game with 158 yards on 14-of-24 passing and his first career touchdown, a 14-yard pass to sophomore Chris Cooper (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) in the second quarter.

Juniors Donnell Brown (Baltimore, Md./Poly) and Tim Campbell (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) had 12 and 10 tackles, respectively, while freshman Cory Pietrzyk (Turnersville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) had nine tackles, including a sack and tackle for loss.

Kyle McGrath had 151 all-purpose yards for King's while Dan Kempa had 102.

Stevenson looks to snap its three-game losing streak next Saturday when it travels to Wilkes for a noon kickoff at Schmidt Stadium.
