Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Highlighted by two goals from junior Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and the first in the career of sophomore Allie Goodwill (Freeland, Md./Hereford), the Stevenson field hockey team defeated Alvernia on Saturday night at Mustang Stadium, 4-1.
With its ninth win of the year, Stevenson (9-6, 3-1 MAC) is one win shy of the school record of 10 wins, set in 2008.
Junior Alison Kagel (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) scored first for the Mustangs less than 10 minutes in of a penalty corner. It was her ninth goal of the season and assisted by junior Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame).
Dempsey added to the lead at 16:34 with an unassisted goal, her 13th of the season. The goal gave her 36 points on the season, breaking the school record for points in a season previously held by Dawn McFarland who had 35 in 2003.
Less than three minutes later, Dempsey would score again on an assist from sophomore Melissa Doering (Street, Md./North Harford) in front of the goal. With 14 goals this season, Dempsey is now one shy of the school record.
Alvernia (7-5, 0-3 MAC) would get on the board two minutes into the second half as Summer Liberto scored on a pass across the middle from Margaret Wentzel.
With just under 10 minutes left to play, Goodwill became the ninth Mustang to score in 2013 as she took a pass from senior Allyson Moody (New Windsor, Md./Westminster) on the right side.
Tonight marked the fourth-straight year that the Mustangs supported breast cancer awareness month by participating in Play for the Cure.
Stevenson heads to Elizabethtown next week for a conference matchup on Tuesday.
