First Half Run Leads Widener to 87-64 Conference Victory Over Mustangs

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Widener erased a 10-point first half deficit with a 25-10 run before halftime while scoring 32 points off turnovers as the Pride maintained a tie for second-place in the Commonwealth Conference with an 87-64 victory over the Stevenson women's basketball team Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The loss snapped a two-game win streak for the Mustangs (7-11, 4-9 MAC) who remained one game behind Lycoming for the fifth and final spot in the Commonwealth Conference Women's Basketball Championship with five games remaining.

Freshman Stephanie Martinez (Freehold Township, N.J./Freehold Township) finished with a career-high 17 points, her fifth-straight game in double figures and the fourth out of the last five in which she has led the team in scoring. She also had 17 points in a 63-60 loss at Salisbury on January 21.

Over her last five games, Martinez has averaged 15.6 points while totaling 19 three-pointers.

Widener (16-4, 11-2 MAC), who trailed 19-9 with 12:19 remaining in the first half following a lay-up by freshman Caitlin Roy (Middletown, Md./Middletown), used a 20-2 run over the next 8:12 to take an eight-point advantage, 29-21 with 4:07 to play.

Vanessa Hejnas and Jennifer Egee each totaled seven first-half points for the Pride who scored 18 off of 18 Stevenson turnovers.

Widener opened the second half with a 32-7 run over the first 5:59 to push its lead to 20 en route to its fourth consecutive win.

Sophomore Kayla Kelly (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) finished with 10 points and five rebounds while senior Sam Murray (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) had nine points and five rebounds.

Hejnas had a game-high 20 points for the Pride while Egee finished with 18. Kate Dellinger totaled seven points, 14 rebounds and five assists.

Stevenson travels to Lycoming on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m., tip-off. The Warriors edged out a 57-55 overtime victory at Owings Mills Gymnasium back on January 12.
