Brett Burrier Scores His 1,000th Career Point in a 77-71 Win Over Widener

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball senior Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) scored his 1,000th career point while junior Alfonzo Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City) posted his third-straight game with at least 20 points as the Mustangs defeated Widener Wednesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium, 77-71.

With the win, Stevenson (12-8, 5-8 MAC) avenged a 23-point defeat to the Pride back on December 8 on the road, 87-64. The win was also the eighth at home for the Mustangs this season, their most since 2006-07.

More importantly, Stevenson moved within two games of Messiah for the fifth and final spot in the Commonwealth Conference Men's Basketball Championship with five games remaining.

Burrier finished the game with eight points, giving him 1,005 in 87 career games, including 958 in 65 games at Stevenson. With five regular season games remaining, he would become the eighth player in school history to score 1,000 career points in a Stevenson uniform.

Hawkins totaled a career-high 24 points, 15 of which came in the second half as the Mustangs held off a late Widener rally. He is averaging 23.3 points per game over his last three and has scored 20 or more point four times this season.

The first half featured four ties and three lead changes before Stevenson used a 10-2 run late to take a 32-24 lead with 3:19 remaining.

The Mustangs opened the second half with a 19-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 18 points, 53-35 with 16:03 to play.

However, the Pride (5-15, 4-9 MAC) used a 14-2 to tie the game at 64-64 with 4:12 left, but Stevenson used three-straight lay-ups by Burrier, freshman Christian Roberts (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) and senior Tyson Jacobs (Baltimore, Md./Owings Mills) to go back in front by six before hitting 7-of-8 attempts from the free throw line in the final 45 seconds to win its third game in the last four at home.

Roberts finished with 14 points and five assists while and freshman Tyrus Costly (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) had 14 points and five rebounds. Burrier and Jacobs each had a team-high seven rebounds.

Rodney Brown led Widener with 20 points and eight rebounds and was 9-of-9 from the free throw line. David Nicholson added 19 points and Greg Lawson had a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Mustangs travel to Lycoming on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m., tip-off in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Warriors, who are tied with Arcadia for third place in the Commonwealth Conference standings, edged out a 104-100 overtime victory at Owings Mills Gymnasium back on January 12.
