Mustangs Win Stevenson Invitational, Perillo MVP, Lubeski All-Tournament

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by tournament Most Valuable Player, sophomore Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends), the Stevenson women's volleyball team posted three consecutive straight-set victories on Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium to capture the 2012 Stevenson Invitational.

The Mustangs (7-1) defeated Cairn, formerly Philadelphia Biblical, Bridgewater (Va.) and former Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington to avenge last year's second-place finish to FDU-Florham.

In the opener, Perillo totaled 20 digs to lead a complete team effort as seven players had at least four kills in a 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 victory against the Highlanders (4-3). Senior Avery Gabbard (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) led the way with seven kills while also adding six digs.

Junior Jenna Campbell (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel) and senior Kristen Lubeski (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) each had six kills as Lubeski did not commit an error in 10 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.

Junior Christine Isenberg (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and sophomore Megan Miller (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Tech) both had five kills while freshmen Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Thomas Edison) and Kelly McKenzie (Nanticoke, Md./James B. Bennett) each had four.

Junior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) totaled three kills, 37 assists and seven digs.

As a team, Stevenson posted 55 digs and 12 total blocks, helping to limit Cairn to a negative hitting percentage of minus-.057 with 29 errors.

All three of the Mustangs' opponents posted negative percentages as they totaled 156 digs and 21 total blocks. Perillo earned MVP honors after totaling 53 digs over eight sets.

Against Bridgewater (1-5), Isenberg posted a game-high 12 kills to go along with eight digs while Lubeski added seven more kills and did not have an error in 13 attempts for a .538 hitting percentage.

Lubeski earned all-tournament team honors after totaling 15 kills and just one error in 29 attempts for a .483 hitting percentage. She also had one solo block and three block assists.

Gabbard had six kills, five digs and four service aces versus the Eagles while Campbell tied her season-high with 10 digs. She also had 10 digs against DeSales on September 2.

In the championship game versus Mary Washington (4-1), Stevenson handed the Eagles their first loss of the season after totaling 48 digs to help limit them to a minus-.084 hitting percentage. Mary Washington also commited 27 attack errors and had nine reception errors.

The trio of Gabbard, Isenberg and Hudson combined for 25 of the Mustangs' 32 kills while Perillo had 16 digs and four service aces. Gabbard, Isenberg and Gieselman each had seven digs.

Stevenson wraps-up its four-game homestand on Tuesday when its hosts a Commonwealth Conference contest versus Albright at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
