Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey freshman Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) made a career-high 13 saves in just her second collegiate start, but Gaby Collins' goal with under eight minutes remaining gave St. Mary's (Md.) a 2-1 non-conference victory Wednesday at Mustang Stadium.
The loss was the eighth-straight for the Mustangs (1-1) against their former CAC rivals who improved to 8-0 all-time against Stevenson. It was the third-straight one-goal victory for the Seahawks in the series and the fourth all-time.
Parker has proven to be a huge factor for St. Mary's in the series as she has totaled 11 points with four goals and three assists in four career games against the Mustangs with two game-winning goals.
Parker scored the game-winning goal in the Seahawks' 2-1 victory a year ago and had the clincher 47 seconds into the second overtime in the team's 3-2 win on Sept. 15, 2010.
After Parker assisted on Amy Eaton's first goal of the season at 23:08 to give St. Mary's a 1-0 lead, Stevenson tied the game just 4:22 later when senior Kaitlyn May (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored her team-leading third goal of the year, unassisted.
The Seahawks outshot Stevenson 17-4, including 8-0 in the second half, but managed to score just two goals thanks to Cavanaugh who stopped seven shots in the first and six in the second. Junior Alyssa Russell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) was also credited with a defensive save.
The Mustangs wrap-up their three game homestand to open the 2012 season on Saturday when they host a non-conference contest with Wilson at Mustang Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
