Box Score ASTON, Pa. - For the third time in as many games this season, Stevenson men's soccer junior Christopher Panian (Monkton, Md./John Carroll) scored off an assist from sophomore Yianni Sarioglou (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) to lead the Mustangs to victory as they beat Neumann on Wednesday, 3-1.
The last time Stevenson (3-0) started the season with three consecutive wins was in 2010 when it started with a school record six-straight.
The Knights (2-1) entered the game ranked at No. 5 in Tuesday's NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Poll.
All three of Panian's team-leading three goals have been assisted by Sarioglou who finished with two assists on Wednesday, giving a team-best four this season which also the most in the Commonwealth Conference. Two of those goals, today and last Friday at Bethany (W. Va.), have been game-winners.
The Mustangs started the scoring in the 28th minute when sophomore Andrew Garner (Owings, Md./Northern) netted his first goal of the season and the first of his career off an assist from junior Taylor Bechtel (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley).
The one-goal lead would hold up until the 45th minute when Neumann's Andy Attah scored on a feed from Dan Chrashewski with just 50 seconds remaining in the first half to tie the game at 1-1 at halftime.
The goal was the first allowed by the Stevenson defense this season and ended a streak of 258:03 in which the Mustangs had not allowed a goal. Prior to Wednesday, the last goal allowed by the team was against York (Pa.) in the first round of the CAC Men's Soccer Championship on Oct. 30, 2011.
After back-to-back corner kicks in the 58th minute, Stevenson would break the tie at 58:47 when Panian scored from Sarioglou.
The goal was the first of two in a span of just 4:46 as Sarioglou picked up his second assist of the game on a pass to freshman Khristian Hall (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College) who scored his second goal of the season to give the Mustangs some breathing room with over 26 minutes to play.
Sophomore Pat Carey (Brooklyn Park, Md./North County) earned his second win in as many starts, totaling two saves in 73:50 before giving way to freshman Kenneth Hersey (Clarksville, Md./Atholton). Through three games this season, the duo has posted a mere 0.33 goals against average while totaling a .938 saves percentage.
The Stevenson defense held Neumann to just eight shots while holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Knights were also whistled for three yellow cards.
The Mustangs continue their five-game road trip to open the 2012 season on Saturday when they travel to Lexington, Virginia to take on Washington and Lee. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
