Mustangs Fall to Hopkins, Finish Second at Giovanni Memorial Tournament

TOWSON, Md. - Stevenson women's volleyball junior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and sophomore Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) were both named to the All-Tournament Team on Sunday at the Giovanni Memorial Tournament hosted by Goucher as the Mustangs finished second.

Stevenson (3-1) defeated DeSales 25-14, 25-23, 23-25, 25-11 to advance to the championship game where they fell in five sets to Johns Hopkins, 25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 25-19, 12-15.

On Sunday, Gieselman totaled 13 kills, 90 assists and 27 digs over nine sets. For the tournament, she had 23 kills, 177 assists and 38 digs. She also added four block assists and one solo.

Meanwhile, Perillo had 66 digs on Sunday and finished the tournament with 100 exactly. She also added three kills from the back row.

Against DeSales, Gieselman had her best all-around performance of the tournament as she finished with eight kills, a season-high 50 assists and 14 digs while adding two block assists. Perillo also had her best output with a game-high 36 digs.

Senior Avery Gabbard (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and junior Christine Isenberg (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) continued to lead the offense, combining for 30 kills, including a game-high 16 from Gabbard. The duo also totaled 14 digs each.

As a team, Stevenson totaled a season-high 94 digs against the Bulldogs (1-3). Junior Jenna Campbell (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel) had a season-high 10 digs.

Senior Kristen Lubeski (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) had a season-high seven kills.

Against Hopkins (4-0), Gieselman led the way with five kills, 40 assists and 13 digs while Perillo added 30 digs. Isenberg totaled 12 kills and 10 digs and freshman Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Thomas Edison) posted a season-high 11 kills. Gabbard had nine kills and 10 digs.

Stevenson opens first season in the Commonwealth Conference on Thursday at Widener. Game time is at 7:00 p.m. The Mustangs were picked to finish third in the Commonwealth Conference this season by the league coaches.
