Hudson Leads Mustangs to Sweep of Local Foe Goucher for Ninth-Straight Win

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson freshman Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Thomas Edison) had seven kills, three digs and three total blocks to lead the Mustangs to their ninth-straight win as they posted a 25-10, 25-10, 25-18 victory over local rival Goucher Tuesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The win extends the Mustangs' (12-1) winning streak over Goucher to five. They also lead the overall series 19-11 and have now won eight of the last 11 under Trumbo.

After an opening ace by Goucher in the first set, senior Avery Gabbard (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) totaled one of her game-high 10 kills while sophomore Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) ran off 12 consecutive points on serve to give Stevenson an early 12-1 lead.

Perillo finished with three service aces on the night to go along with a game-high 12 digs while Gabbard also added nine digs.

The Mustangs hit .455 in the opening set, the second-best attack percentage in a set this season behind a first-set .484 at home versus Rowan on Saturday.

The Gophers' (3-10) 1-0 lead in the first set would be their only one of the night as the closest they came was a 1-1 tie in the second. Stevenson would go on to hold Goucher to only 38 points and a .000 hitting percentage, their lowest of the season since hitting minus-.009 against Cabrini on September 2.

Junior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) totaled five kills, 35 assists and seven digs. Senior Kristen Lubeski (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) also had five kills and two total blocks.

Goucher was led by Megan Chalk who had six kills and 12 digs. Sarah Johnson dished out 12 assists.

Stevenson travels to Messiah on Thursday for a match-up of Commonwealth Conference undefeateds. The two teams met last season with the Mustangs prevailing in a thrilling five-set victory on Sept. 25, 2011 at Owings Mills Gymnasium, 25-23, 21-25, 25-27, 25-13, 16-14.

Prior to last season's loss, Messiah had not surrendered a set to Stevenson in five previous meetings. The Falcons lead the all-time series which began in 1999, 5-1. Their last victory came at home on Oct. 31, 2009.

Thursday's game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
