Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by a career-high five points from junior Allyson Moody (New Windsor, Md./Westminster), the Stevenson field hockey team opened the 2012 season with a convincing 6-0 victory over local rival Goucher Friday night at Mustang Stadium.
Moody finished with two goals and one assist to lead seven different scorers for the Mustangs (1-0) who have won two of their last three at home where the team plays six of its first eight to begin the season.
Senior Kaitlyn May (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and sophomore Alison Kagel (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) each scored twice as Stevenson scored six first half goals, including the final three in a span of just 6:18.
Kagel started the scoring just over seven minutes in off an assist from freshman Karen Mata (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson). May then picked up her first goal of the season unassisted at 14:18 before Moody scored only 3:39 later on a redirect from junior Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston).
Moody scored the second of back-to-back goals at 23:25 before Kagel scored her second off an assist from sophomore Margaret Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) less than two minutes later at 25:05.
May then capped the scored with her 26th career goal, scoring off a penalty corner on assists from Moody and sophomore Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame). May has scored at least two goals seven times in her career.
The Mustangs outshot Goucher 18-5, including 12-2 in the first half. Freshman Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) made her first career start in goal, playing the entire first half to earn her first victory before giving way to sophomore Katelynn DeFiore (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) who made two second half saves.
Stevenson also held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Mustangs return to action next Wednesday, September 5 with a non-conference contest versus St. Mary's (Md.) at Mustang Stadium beginning at 4:00 p.m.
