Mustangs Fall to No. 7 Mary Washington, Secure CAC Tournament Berth

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Stevenson women's basketball junior Sam Murray (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) scored a team-high 13 points, including nine on three-pointers, as the Mustangs fell to No. 7 Mary Washington Wednesday at the Anderson Center.

Despite the loss, Stevenson (10-14, 5-10 CAC) clinched the final spot in the CAC Women's Basketball Championship by virtue of a 78-69 road victory by Marymount (Va.) over Frostburg State. As a result, the Mustangs will be the sixth-seed and travel to third-seeded Salisbury next Tuesday, February 21 in the first round.

This year marks Stevenson's second trip to the CAC tournament and first since 2008 when the team earned the seventh-seed and traveled to second-seeded Marymount (Va.) in the first round.

Mary Washington (23-0, 14-0 CAC), who entered the game with the nation's top-ranked scoring defense, allowing just 40.7 points per game, held the Mustangs to just 26.1 percent shooting from the floor while outrebounding them, 43-21.

Stevenson trailed 32-17 at halftime before the Eagles opened the second half on a 16-0 run, holding the Mustangs without a basket until senior Amanda Craig (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) hit a jumper with 10:01 remaining.

Murray was 5-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. Over her last three games, she has gone 8-for-10 from three point range and over the last 11, has led the team in scoring eight times. During that time, she has averaged 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds.

Freshman Kayla Kelly (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) finished with six points while freshman Kia Dawkins (Clinton, Md./Dr. Henry Wise) had four points and a career-high eight rebounds.

Jenna McRae had a game-high 16 points for Mary Washington while Carol Dye added nine points and seven rebounds.

Stevenson wraps-up the regular season on Saturday at Marymount (Va.). Game time is at 2:00 p.m. Earlier this season, the Mustangs posted their first-ever win in 11 all-time meetings against the Saints, 52-50 at Owings Mills Gymnasium on January 14.
