Mustangs Allow Five Unanswered Goals Giving UNE First Program Win, 6-4

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Stevenson women's ice hockey team had 11 different players register a point and held a 4-1 lead midway through the second period before the University of New England scored the game's final five goals to post a 6-4 victory Sunday at Harold Alfond Arena.

The loss was the first for Stevenson (4-4) against the other two inaugural Division III women's ice hockey programs this season in Franklin Pierce and New England. The Mustangs finished 3-1 while Franklin Pierce went 2-2 and New England was 1-3.

Stevenson has had 19 different players score at least one point this season, including freshman Sydney Hughes (Califon, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) who picked up her first career point on Sunday.

Freshman Kristen Webber (West Lebanon, N.H./Kimball Union Academy) scored the first goal for Stevenson at the 6:34 mark in the first period off helpers from freshmen Rachel Martell (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead High School) and Katie Abbott (Royal Oak, Mich./Belle Tire).

Hughes then assisted on the first goal of the second period by freshman Sydney Sakwa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) to extend the lead to 3-1 at 5:13 of the second.

Freshman Molly O'Neil (Aurora, Colo./Colorado Selects) capped the scoring for the Mustangs 1:41 later on a pass from Jessie Capanelli (Lancaster, Pa./West Chester Quakers).

The Nor'Easters earned the first win in program history in the team's seventh game of the season on the efforts of Jenni Poulin and Marissa Clifford-Biederman who combined for six goals and 10 points.

Clifford-Biederman had a hand in all six goals for New England, totaling six points on three goals and three assists. Meanwhile, Poulin had four points, netting a hat-trick and adding one assist. Her first two goals came just 27 seconds apart midway through the second period, starting UNE's comeback, before her third proved to be the game-winner with 16:05 left in the game.

The Mustangs do not return to the ice until Sunday, December 30 when they host a two-game set versus Neumann at Reisterstown SportsPlex. Face-off is at 4:15 p.m.
