First Half Deficit Too Much to Overcome in Mustangs' 87-64 Loss at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - Limited by a 25.0 percent field goal percentage and a minus-12 rebounding margin, the Stevenson men's basketball team was held to 22 first half points and trailed by as many as 21 as the Mustangs dropped a Commonwealth Conference contest at Widener Saturday, 87-64 at the Schwartz Center.

After starting the season with three-straight wins, Stevenson (4-3, 1-3 MAC) has lost three of its last four since opening conference play.

The Mustangs were just 7-for-25 from the floor in the opening half while Widener went 18-for-36, including 6-of-13 from three-point range as the Pride built a 42-22 lead. Senior Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) scored 10 of the team's 22 points as he was 4-of-8 from the field while the rest of the team was 3-for-17.

Junior Alfonzo Hawkins (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City) scored all of his team-high 15 points in the second half as Stevenson scored 42 points on 15-of-34 shooting, 44.1 percent. The team was also 10-of-16 from the free throw line.

Despite the improvement, the Mustangs trailed by as many as 29 points in the second half and got no closer than 18.

Burrier finished with 14 points while junior Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla./Archbishop Curley) added 13 points and four rebounds. Freshman Tyrus Costly (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances) had six points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Widener (2-5, 2-2 MAC), who never trailed after starting the game on a 13-0 run, was led by Dillon Fields who scored a game-high 23 points. Greg Lawson totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Pride's five starters combined for 70 points, 33 rebounds and 18 assists.

Stevenson returns home on Saturday when it welcomes Albright to Owings Mills Gymnasium for a 4:00 p.m., tip-off.
