Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by Most Valuable Player, junior Jessica Gieselman (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill), the Stevenson women's volleyball team completed a perfect run through the Commonwealth Conference in the team's first season with a 25-23, 25-20, 25-22 victory over Messiah in the conference tournament championship game Sunday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The win marks the first conference championship for Stevenson (35-2) in the program's 15-year history. It also guarantees the team of its second-straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship with the conference's automatic bid.
The 2012 Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year, Gieselman finished Sunday's game with three kills, 36 assists and eight digs while posting four kills, 75 assists and 15 digs in two games in the conference tournament.
Sophomore Megan Miller (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Tech) led a well-balanced Mustang offense with nine kills while junior Christine Isenberg (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) and senior Avery Gabbard (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) each had eight. Isenberg also added nine digs. Freshman Imani Hudson (Burke, Va./Thomas Edison) and senior Kristen Lubeski (Bishopville, Md./Stephen Decatur) had seven and five kills, respectively.
Defensively, Lubeski had five total blocks while Hudson added three. Sophomore Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) posted a game-high 18 digs.
Lauren Rees led the Falcons (24-8) with 14 kills and 14 digs. Lindsay King had four kills and four total blocks while Allison Hill had 14 digs. Jessica Geib had two kills, 35 assists and eight digs.
In 11 games against Commonwealth Conference opponents this season, including two in the conference tournament, Stevenson posted an 11-0 record, winning 34 out of 35 sets and losing just one at Messiah on September 20.
