Strong Second Half Leads Mustangs to 82-65 Season-Opening Win Over Gallaudet

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball senior Brett Burrier (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the second half as the Mustangs outscored Gallaudet 42-29 en route to an 82-65 victory Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium in the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic.

The win was the first in a season opener for Stevenson (1-0) since Nov. 18, 2006, snapping a five-game losing streak. That year, the Mustangs opened the season with a 71-69 victory at York (Pa.) before going on to finish the year with its second consecutive 20-win season.

Stevenson shot 58.9 percent from the floor and scored 29 points off of 21 Bison turnovers. The team's 82 points were also the most it has scored in the last two seasons.

Burrier led four Mustangs in double figures. He was 9-of-14 from the field and hit three three-pointers. Junior Kelly Davis (Patterson, N.J./Manchester) scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting while junior Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla./Archbishop Curley) and sophomore James Milton (Detroit, Mich./Parkville) each had 10 points. McCray added a game-high eight rebounds while Milton had seven.

Following a 16-3 run, Stevenson led by as many as 19 points in the second half at 81-62.

Layton Seeber led Gallaudet (0-1) with 15 points and six assists while Danny Kelly had 13 points and eight rebounds.

The Mustangs look for back-to-back wins for the first time since Nov. 23, 2010 when they host UMass-Boston on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The Beacons posted an 87-71 victory over Franciscan on Saturday, totaling 62 points in the paint.
