BUFFALO, N.Y. - Stevenson women's ice hockey freshman Katie Abbott (Royal Oak, Mich./Belle Tire) scored both goals, including the first in program history with 44 seconds remaining in the second period, highlighting the first-ever game in school history as the Mustangs fell at Buffalo State Saturday at the Ice Arena, 6-2.

Stevenson (0-1) fared pretty well in its inaugural contest, allowing just two first period goals, 11 shots and one power play opportunity. Freshman Anastassia Nelson (San Antonio, Tex./Ohio Flames) got the first start in goal and had nine first period saves en route to 29 total.

The Bengals jumped out to a 5-0 lead with Courtney Carnes totaling two goals and one assist while Kara Goodwin had two assists. Two of Buffalo State's goal came shorthanded.

Abbott's first goal in school history came at 19:16 of the second period and was assisted by freshmen Sydney Sakwa (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) and Erin McLoughlin (Weston, Mass./Fontbonne Academy).

Goodwin scored her first goal of the season at 4:46 of the third period on the power play before Abbott netted her second of the game at 11:02 off assists from freshmen Kylee Buchel (Spencerport, N.Y./Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) and Madison Lange (Califon, N.J./New Jersey Rockets).

Buffalo State finished 2-for-5 on the power play while Stevenson was 1-for-7. The Bengals also held a minimal advantage in face-offs, 31-30, and a slight edge in shots, 35-32.

Women's ice hockey is the 23rd intercollegiate sport offered at Stevenson and the seventh to be added in the last four years. The Mustangs are the 74th women's program in Division III.

The two teams return to the ice Saturday for a noon face-off.
