May Scores Ninth Goal of the Season, Russell First, Mustangs Blank Alvernia

Box Score

READING, Pa. - Stevenson field hockey senior Kaitlyn May (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season while junior Alyssa Russell (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) netted her first as the Mustangs snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory at Alvernia Saturday.

With the win, Stevenson (7-11, 3-4 MAC) currently holds the fifth and final spot in the 2012 Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Championship with one game remaining at home against Albright on Wednesday.

The Mustangs are tied with Widener who also has a 3-4 conference record, but they own the tiebreak against the Pride by virtue of a 2-1 overtime win at home back on September 22.

Freshman Katie Cavanaugh (Parkville, Md./Perry Hall) made 12 saves on Saturday, five short of her career-high. She totaled seven saves in the first half and was assisted by a defensive save from sophomore Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville, Md./Institute of Notre Dame).

Hopp and Russell are tied for the team-lead in defensive saves with three each.

Alvernia (8-9, 2-5 MAC) was not able to score despite holding a 19-14 edge in shots, including a margin of 12-4 in the first half.

The Mustangs were finally able to break open a scoreless game over 45 minutes into the contest when May scored unassisted with 24:10 remaining after a penalty corner and a shot by sophomore Caitlin Dempsey (Fallston, Md./Fallston) that was saved by Alvernia's Erin Wunsch.

Stevenson would get an insurance goal with just 1:54 to play in the game when Russell scored off a rebound in front on a shot by sophomore Brooke Few (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll). The assist was Few's second of the season, tying her for the team-lead with four others.

The Mustangs conclude the regular season on Wednesday when they host Albright on Senior Day beginning at 4:00 p.m., at Mustang Stadium.

For Stevenson, it is simple. Win and you're in. A victory over the Lions would ensure them of the fifth and final spot in the 2012 Commonwealth Conference Field Hockey Championship. However, a loss would give Albright the final seed as the two teams would be tied with 3-5 conference records, but the Lions would hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their head-to-head win.
