Team Effort Leads Mustangs to First Conference Victory of the Season at Hood

Box Score

FREDERICK, Md. - A total of nine players scored for the Stevenson women's basketball team, led by a season-high 17 points from senior Daniela Poss (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel), as the Mustangs opened the new year with its first CAC victory of the season Wednesday, 63-56 over Hood on the road at BB&T Arena.

Stevenson (5-6, 1-3 CAC), who trailed for just 2:14 in tonight's game, snapped a four-game losing streak overall and a six-game conference skid that dated back to a 55-40 road victory over Hood on Feb. 5, 2011.

Poss was one of three players in double figures for the Mustangs as freshman Kayleigh Guzek (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) had 12 points and freshman Kyarra Harmon (Waldorf, Md./North Point) tied a career-high with 10 for the second-straight game.

Senior Amanda Craig (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) finished with nine points and a season-high nine rebounds, just missing her first career double double.

Harmon and junior Sam Murray (Reisterstown/St. Paul's School For Girls) each added eight rebounds as Stevenson out-rebounded the Blazers, 51-38.

The Mustangs led by as many as six in the opening half, 19-13 with 4:34 remaining, before Hood (3-9, 0-5 CAC) rallied to tie the game at 25-25 at halftime.

The game was tied despite Stevenson shooting 22.2 percent from the floor and totaling 20 first half turnovers. The team was able to overcome that thanks to going 13-for-15 from the free throw line and holding a 28-19 advantage in rebounds, limiting Hood to just four on offense.

The Mustangs took their largest lead of the game at 44-36 on a lay-up by freshman Kayla Kelly (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) with 10:36 left in the second half before a 10-1 run by the Blazers game them just their third lead of the game at 46-45 with 6:01 to play.

However, led by six points from Harmon, Stevenson answered with an 11-2 run to push its lead back to eight at 56-48 with 1:47 remaining before hitting 5-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 52 seconds to seal the victory.

The Mustangs finished the game with a season-high 25 free throws as they were 25-for-33 for 75.8 percent.

Dyanna Prater led Hood with 16 points while Emily Maerz totaled a double double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Stevenson travels to future MAC rival Alvernia on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m., tip-off with the Crusaders. The Mustangs are 1-0 against the MAC this season with a 65-42 victory at Arcadia in the season-opener for both teams on November 15.
