Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by a balanced attack that included four kills each from junior Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck), sophomore Stacey Rex (Finksburg/Westminster) and sophomore Christine Isenberg (Taneytown/Francis Scott Key), the Stevenson women's volleyball team opened the season with a 25-5, 25-5, 25-12 victory over Notre Dame (Md.) Thursday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Six players had at least three kills for the Mustangs (1-0) who opened their third-straight season with a three set win over the Gators.
Seniors Kristin Steinnagel (Eldersburg/Liberty) and Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) and freshman Megan Miller (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Tech) each had three kills while sophomore Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had nine digs and 24 assists.
The Gators (0-1) hampered by 18 attack errors and 19 reception errors while totaling just four kills and had a minus-.264 hitting percentage. One of the bright sports for Notre Dame was Helaina Caldwell who had a game-high 10 digs. Marylu Ortiz had five digs and Amanda Sijera and Tawny Cevora each had four.
Gabbard had all four of kills in the opening set before Carney added three kills in the second as Stevenson raced out to a 9-0 lead.
The Mustangs travel to Harrisonburg, Virginia this weekend for four matches in the Eastern Mennonite Hampton Inn & Sleep Inn Invitational. They open with Mary Baldwin on Friday at 5:00 p.m., before facing Catholic at 9:00 p.m.
