Mustangs Advance to First-Ever Championship Game, Win Five-Set Thriller

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's volleyball sophomore Christine Isenberg (Taneytown/Francis Scott Key) totaled 19 kills and a career-high 32 digs as the Mustangs advanced to their first-ever conference championship game with a 25-20, 27-25, 19-25, 20-25, 18-16 victory over York (Pa.) Thursday in front of 715 fans at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Stevenson (31-2), who was ranked at No. 4 in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region for the second-straight week, won its 19th-straight game and its third out of four in five sets this season. The team also improved its record at home to 12-2.

The second-seeded Mustangs totaled a season-high 124 digs to help overcome 16 service errors and nine reception errors. They also had 65 kills, two shy of their season-high set against FDU-Florham on September 11.

Junior Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broaneck) also had a game-high 19 kills while senior Brooke Gilley (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) had a season-high 11 kills.

Sophomore Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) tied a season-high with 54 assists and 19 digs as she was one of three players who had 19 digs for Stevenson, joining senior Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun), who posted a season-high, and freshman Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends).

Freshman Megan Miller (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Tech) added eight kills and a season-high 10 digs while senior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) had 11 digs.

Thursday's game featured 44 ties and 17 lead changes, including 12 ties and five lead changes in the deciding fifth set. Trailing 20-18 in the first set, the Mustangs finished with a 7-0 run to win by five before rallying from a 24-20 deficit in the second for a two-point victory.

The sixth-seeded Spartans (16-17) took the next two sets after scoring nine of the final 12 points in the third and eight of the last 11 in the fourth.

York led 11-8 in the fifth set before a 4-0 run by Stevenson gave the team its first lead since it was 3-2. The scored would be tied for more times, including for the last time at 16-16 before a Spartan attack error and a kill by Isenberg sealed the 31st win of the season for the Mustangs, leaving them one shy of the school record set in 2008.

Julie Coombs had 12 kills and 13 digs to lead the Spartans who had 113 digs, but posted a .086 hitting percentage. Heather Bucher totaled seven kills and 21 digs while Ashley Rineman tied Isenberg with a game-high 32 digs.

Jessica Moyer had 11 kills and Cortni Rentzel posted 41 assists and 17 digs.

Stevenson looks to avenge its only conference loss of the season on Saturday when it travels to top-seeded Salisbury for a rematch with the Sea Gulls in the CAC title game. Salisbury, who defeated Mary Washington 3-0 in Thursday's other semifinal, posted a 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 victory over the Mustangs on the road on September 21.

Game time is at 6:00 p.m., inside the Maggs Physical Activities Center.
