Burrier, Hindle Lead Mustangs in 78-76 Loss to Elizabethtown in Home Opener

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's basketball junior Brett Burrier (Westminster/Winters Mill) and sophomore Joe Hindle (Clarksville/River Hill) combined for 41 points and nine three-pointers, but Elizabethtown used a 20-5 run late in the second half and held off a last minute rally en route to a 78-76 victory Tuesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (1-3) were 13-of-22 from three-point range and outrebounded the Blue Jays, 32-23.

Burrier finished with 24 points, including 15 in the second half, to go along with seven rebounds while Hindle scored all 17 of his points in the second half and was 5-of-8 from behind the arc.

Stevenson led 60-51 with 8:51 remaining in the second half before Elizabethtown went on a 20-5 run to take a six-point advantage at 71-65 with 2:40 to play. Andrew Mantz scored seven of his 13 points during the run while Jon Markel added five.

However, led by two three-pointers from Hindle, the Mustangs would rally to within one at 77-76 with six seconds remaining.

After Steve Ennis made the first of two free throw attempts and missed the second, Stevenson senior Greg Collins (Baltimore/Western Tech) grabbed the rebound, but could not advance the ball for a last second attempt and the Blue Jays escaped with their first win of the season.

Elizabethtown (1-3) shot 55.1 percent from the floor, including 60.0 percent in the second half, while going 8-for-13 from three-point range. Joe Schwalm led the team with 20 points and was 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Ennis added 14 points while Mantz had 13 points and six rebounds. Kyle McConnell finished with eight points and 10 assists.

Phil Wenger scored 11 points for the Blue Jays who got 37 points from their bench while scoring 36 points in the paint.

The Mustangs also had four players in double figure scoring as junior Brandon Carroll (Randallstown/Archbishop Curley) had 12 points and Collins totaled 11 to go along with nine rebounds. Collins also had four assists and four steals.

Sophomore Stefon McCray (Milton, Fla./Archbishop Curley) totaled four points, five rebounds and a career-high six assists.

Stevenson travels to NYU Poly on Saturday, November 26 for a non-conference doubleheader with the women's team. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m.
