Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson men's soccer sophomore Taylor Bechtel (Baltimore/Archbishop Curley) scored his first career goal Wednesday, but the Mustangs fell at home to No. 14 Rutgers-Camden 4-1 at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (5-6-1) have lost the last three meetings against the Scarlet Raptors and three in-a-row at home after going 11-1-2 a year ago.
Stevenson was put on the defensive almost immediately as senior goalie Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) made a save in the game's first minute. He finished the day with four being giving way to freshman Pat Carey (Brookyln Park/North County) who made his fourth appearance of the season.
Rutgers-Camden (10-2-1) drew first blood in the 15th minute when Matt Lanouette poked home a shot from close range following a scramble in the box.
The Mustangs nearly equalized just six minutes later, but freshman Fabian Allen (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Morristown (N.J.)) and sophomore Josh Stover (West Friendship/Marriotts Ridge) were denied by Scarlet Raptor net minder Tim VanLiew.
Stevenson almost tied the game again in the 52nd minute, but VanLiew again came up with the save, this time on sophomore Marcus Green (Rosedale/Overlea).
VanLiew finished the game with three saves.
Rutgers-Camden (10-2-1) added its second goal in the 64th minute when Mitch Grotti lobbed a free kick into the box where Bobby Foster saved the ball from the end line by heading it in front to Zaiere Putmon who tallied his second goal of the year. Both Grotti and Foster were credited with assists.
Eight minutes later, Foster used his head again, this time to finish a throw-in from Joe Auleta to push the Scarlet Raptors' lead to 3-0.
Bechtel put the Mustangs on the board in the 82nd minute when he fired home a free kick from the left side edge of the box. Catching the VanLiew off guard, Bechtel bent his kick around the wall and into the near corner for his first career point.
Rutgers-Camden capped the scoring just three minutes from time when Auleta scored on a penalty kick.
Stevenson hosts a key CAC contest with Hood on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
