May Scores Twice, Second Half Rally Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to McDaniel

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson field hockey junior Kaitlyn May (Arnold/Archbishop Spalding) scored both Mustang goals as they rallied from a two-goal, second half deficit, but Paige Messersmith scored with less than seven minutes remaining to lift McDaniel to a 3-2 victory Thursday at Mustang Stadium.

Stevenson (5-12) fell behind by one 12 minutes into the opening half when Lindsay Riordon scored her team-leading 12th goal of the game off an assist from Julie Little.

The Green Terror held a 1-0 lead at the half after outshooting the Mustangs 12-3 and totaling 11 penalty corners.

McDaniel (9-5) doubled its lead less than 15 minutes in the second half when Sarah Meszler scored unassisted on a scramble in front.

May got the Mustangs on the board seven minutes later when she scored on a rebound off a shot from sophomore Allyson Moody (New Windsor, Md./Westminster).

May would tie the game just 1:47 later when she redirected a blast from outside the circle by senior Brittany Martin (Hampstead/North Carroll) with 11 minutes remaining.

The goal was May's team-leading 14 of the season and marked her fifth of the season with at least two. She has scored seven of her goals over the last four games, scoring twice in three.

For Martin, it was her 11th point of the season and the 40th of her career.

Messersmith would then score the game-winner with just over six minutes remaining, capping a flurry of activity in front of the Stevenson net in which the Green Terror totaled six shots and five penalty corners in a span of 3:53.

Junior Kelsi Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) finished with 11 saves for Stevenson, two short of her career-high. Freshmen Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville/Institute of Notre Dame) and Margaret Gill (White Hall/North Harford) each had a defensive save.

For McDaniel, Stephanie Thomson had seven saves, including seven in the second half.

The Green Terror totaled 23 shots and 20 penalty corners compared to 12 shots and 14 penalty corners for the Mustangs.

Stevenson wraps up regular season play with back-to-back road games beginning Saturday with its final CAC contest at Mary Washington beginning at 1:00 p.m.
