Strong Second Half Lifts York (Pa.) Past Men's Basketball, 90-62

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Led by 13 points from Kevin Whaley, York (Pa.) outscored the Stevenson men's basketball team by 26 points in the second half to break open a two-point halftime lead as the Spartans picked up their third-straight victory, 90-62 Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Whaley finished the game with a season-high 29 points, going 10-of-17 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. He also added four assists.

The Mustangs (5-12, 1-7 CAC) never led in the game, but trailed by only two at the half thanks to a 15-6 run over the final 5:40 to cut their deficit to 34-32 at the break. Freshman Joe Hindle (Clarksville/River Hill) totaled five of his 11 points during the run while sophomore Laron Knight (Waldorf/Thomas Stone) added four.

Stevenson only trailed by three with 11:48 remaining in the second half following a three-pointer by senior Greg Woody (Baltimore/Mount Saint Joseph), but a 31-4 run by the Spartans over the next seven minutes gave them their largest lead of the game, 82-52 with 4:18 left.

Jeremy Skoloda had 15 points and eight assists for York (12-5, 6-2 CAC) who won its third-straight in the series after the Mustangs swept both games during the 2008-09 season. Paul Kouvaris totaled seven points, 17 rebounds, three assists and three steals while Mo Oursler had nine points, seven of which came during the Spartans' second half run.

Hindle was the lone Mustang to reach double figures and is averaging 13.5 points in his last two home games after posting a career-high 16 in the team's 92-59 win over NYU Poly on January 8.

The Mustangs, playing without leading scorer Brett Burrier, had five players score at least eight points as Woody finished with nine and sophomore Andrew Bishop (Lothian/Southern), sophomore Danny Murphy (Severn/Glen Burnie) and junior Nick DeSouza (Bowie/Archbishop Spalding) each had eight.

The Spartans totaled 31 points off 21 Stevenson turnovers and had 18 second-chance points and 14 on the fast break.

The Mustangs travel to No. 13 St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
