HARRISONBURG, Va. - After opening its season in
front a school-record crowd Wednesday, the Stevenson women's
volleyball team returned to action on Friday night at the EMU
Hampton Inn and Sleep Inn Invitational hosted by Eastern Mennonite,
splitting two matches with a 3-0 win over Mary Baldwin and a 3-1
loss to CAC rival Mary Washington.
The Mustangs (2-1) posted a 25-12, 25-20, 25-19 victory over
Mary Baldwin before dropping a 25-20, 24-26, 20-25, 18-25 victory
to Mary Washington.
Sophomore Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck) led the Mustangs with 20 kills and 25
digs on the day, totaling 10 kills and seven digs versus Mary
Baldwin and 10 kills, 18 digs against Mary Washington.
Other notable performances versus Mary Baldwin (0-3) included
freshman Stacey Rex
(Finksburg/Westminster) who totaled a career-high seven
kills and freshman Samantha
Shetterly (Elkridge/Mount de Sales) who had a
career-high 11 digs. Rex had committed just one error in 13
attempts for a .462 hitting percentage.
Junior Jen Glock
(Westminster/Westminster) also had seven kills, posting a
.364 hitting percentage, while junior Amy Rudolph (North
East/Rising Sun) added 15 assists and nine digs. Freshman
Jessica
Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had five kills,
19 assists and four digs.
Against Mary Washington, Stevenson won the first set and was
just one point away from winning the second, holding a 24-21 lead
and serving, but the Eagles (2-0) rallied to score the final five
points before sweeping the final two sets.
The Mustangs were hampered by 27 attack errors and a .050
hitting percentage as well as 11 service errors.
Geiselman totaled 10 kills, 15 assists, seven digs and three
block assists with Rex contributing seven kills and six digs.
Rudolph had 10 assists and five digs while Glock added three kills
and five block assists.
