Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Six different players
scored as the Stevenson men's soccer team snapped a three-game
losing streak with its first win over Goucher since 2002 as the
Mustangs remained unbeaten in seven non-conference games with a 5-0
victory over the Gophers Wednesday at Caves Athletics Complex.
Stevenson (7-3) picked up its fifth win in six home games this
season and is 11-4 over the last two. The win was also the team's
first against the Gophers since Oct. 12, 2002 when the Mustangs
prevailed by a 4-0 margin.
Senior Matthew Liska
(Perry Hall/Archbishop Curley) scored the game-winner just
15 minutes in off a feed from sophomore Ansger Otto
(Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) that ended Stevenson's
scoreless streak at three games and 254 minutes.
Eight minutes later, Otto sprinted down the center of the pitch
on a breakaway and beat Goucher netminder David Spivey to score his
team leading 12th goal of the season and first in the last three
games.
In the 29th minute, Otto sent in a corner that found the feet of
junior Chris Sokolis
(Perry Hall/Perry Hall) who would've scored if not for the
efforts of Dan Brody who cleared his shot off the line, but not out
of play.
Sophomore Rodrick Linkonko
(Arlington, Va./Wakefield) gathered the ball and sent a
cross into the penalty area where freshman Josh Stover (West
Friendship/Marriotts Ridge) put away his second goal of
the season to give the Mustangs a 3-0 halftime lead.
Senior Tyler King
(Parkville/Calvert Hall) would shine in the second half
scoring the fourth and fifth goals for the Mustangs in the opening
10 minutes. Otto and Liska each picked up assists.
King finished the game with a career-high four points.
Otto's four points today helped him reclaim his position as the
nation's leading scorer across all three NCAA divisions with 29
points and 12 goals, surpassing Ramapo's Rob Santaniello. The
Roadrunners finished in a scoreless draw at William Paterson
Wednesday.
Stevenson sophomore Cory Spindler
(Sykesville/Century) earned his second career victory,
first of the season and first career shutout, making two saves.
Freshman Alex Zeidler
(Woodstown, N.J./Woodstown) made his second consecutive
relief appearance clocking 23 minutes, facing two shots.
Spivey finished with four saves for the Gophers (4-7).
The Mustangs have a week off before returning to action against
undefeated and No. 17 Salisbury next Wednesday, October 6 at Caves
Athletics Complex. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
