OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's
volleyball sophomore Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck) and senior Alex Mercer
(Eldersburg/Liberty) combined for 25 kills as the Mustangs
remained unbeaten at home and won their eighth-straight, 25-9,
16-25, 25-12, 25-21 over local rival Goucher Tuesday night at
Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Stevenson (10-1) also received six kills, 34 assists and a
game-high 15 digs from freshman Jessica Gieselman
(Westminster/Winters Mill).
The Mustangs cruised through the first set before the Gophers
capitalized on 10 Stevenson attack errors and three service erros
in the second to hand the team its first set loss at home this
season, snapping a streak of 10-straight.
With second set tied at 4-4, Stevenson committed four
consecutive attack errors to give the Gophers an 8-4 lead and they
never let it slip below three the rest of the way.
However, the Mustangs regained control in the third set,
totaling a .360 hitting percentage with 11 kills compared to just
six kills and a zero hitting percentage for Goucher.
The fourth set was back-and-forth, featuring 14 ties and seven
lead changes before Stevenson broke open a 15-15 tie behind the
service of junior Jamie Krens (Owings
Mills/Franklin) and back-to-back kills from Mercer and
Gabbard to take a four-point lead.
Junior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) finished
with four kills and 14 digs while freshman Samantha Shetterly (Elkridge/Mount de Sales) added 12 digs as
Stevenson totaled 65 as a team. Junior Amy Rudolph (North
East/Rising Sun) had eight digs.
Kasey Quinn led the Gophers (2-4) with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Ashley Fan had two kills and nine digs while Rebecca Schaefer also
had nine digs.
Stevenson opens CAC play on Thursday when it hosts Marymount
(Va.) at 7:00 p.m.
