VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Stevenson field hockey
junior Jorden Haney (Elkridge/Long Reach) scored
off an assist from senior Katelyn Manocheh
(Timonium/Maryvale Prep) in the game's final 10 minutes,
but the Mustangs couldn't overcome a 6-0 deficit en route to a 6-1
loss to No. 12 Christopher Newport Sunday at the National Training
Center.
Stevenson (4-2) played much better in the second, but was
outshot 26-3, including 14-0 in the first half. The Captains also
held a 16-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Christopher Newport led 2-0 at the half after first half goals
from Chrissy Kurecki and Caitlin Cahill. Kurecki also picked up an
assist to Cahill.
The Captains (4-1) added four more second half goals, including
two by Shelby Judkins and a penalty stoke from Sarah Wister, to
stretch its lead to 6-0 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the
game.
After Katelyn Yandle scored with 9:42 remaining, Stevenson
scored its lone goal just eight seconds later off a penalty corner
when Haney netted her second goal of the season and the second of
her career off a feed from Manocheh.
Haney now has two goals and four points through six games this
season after totaling two assists in 24 games entering this
season.
Senior Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) made a
season-high 12 saves in goal while seniors Natalie DiPaolo
(Baltimore/Perry Hall) and Christie Greer (Bel
Air/Bel Air) each had a defensive save.
Judkins led Christopher Newport with four points while Kurecki
had three with one goal and one assist. Brittany Bradsher earned
the win, playing the first 59 minutes before giving way to Julie
Collins who made two saves and allowed one goal in the final
11.
Stevenson returns home where they will host CAC rival St. Mary's
(Md.) on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m., at Caves Athletics
Complex.
