LANGHORNE, Pa. - Led by tournament MVP,
sophomore Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck), and all-tournament selection, senior
Alex
Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty), the Stevenson women's
volleyball team won its third consecutive Crimson Eagle Classic
with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 victory over host Philadelphia Biblical
Saturday at Mason Activity Center.
The Mustangs (9-1) have won seven-straight and their nine wins
in their first 10 games is the second-best start to a season,
trailing only the 2008 team that started the year with a school
record 15 consecutive wins.
Stevenson has posted a perfect 9-0 record in the Crimson Eagle
Classic the last three seasons, defeating host Philadelphia
Biblical in the championship each time.
Gabbard totaled 11 kills and seven digs against the Crimson
Eagles (5-4) while Mercer added 10 digs and four total blocks.
Junior Alexa Carney
(Towson/Towson) was also named to the all-tournament team
and had a season-high eight kills to go along with five digs.
Freshman Jessica
Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) added 31 assists
and six digs while junior Brooke Gilley
(Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) had four kills and three
assists.
Stevenson advanced to the championship game with 3-0 wins over
New Jersey City and FDU-Florham.
The Mustangs return home to face local rival Goucher on Tuesday
at 7:00 p.m., in the new Owings Mills Gymnasium where they have
started the season with three-straight wins.
