Mustangs Win Third-Straight Crimson Eagle Classic

LANGHORNE, Pa. - Led by tournament MVP, sophomore Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck), and all-tournament selection, senior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty), the Stevenson women's volleyball team won its third consecutive Crimson Eagle Classic with a 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 victory over host Philadelphia Biblical Saturday at Mason Activity Center.

The Mustangs (9-1) have won seven-straight and their nine wins in their first 10 games is the second-best start to a season, trailing only the 2008 team that started the year with a school record 15 consecutive wins.

Stevenson has posted a perfect 9-0 record in the Crimson Eagle Classic the last three seasons, defeating host Philadelphia Biblical in the championship each time.

Gabbard totaled 11 kills and seven digs against the Crimson Eagles (5-4) while Mercer added 10 digs and four total blocks. Junior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) was also named to the all-tournament team and had a season-high eight kills to go along with five digs.

Freshman Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) added 31 assists and six digs while junior Brooke Gilley (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) had four kills and three assists.

Stevenson advanced to the championship game with 3-0 wins over New Jersey City and FDU-Florham.

The Mustangs return home to face local rival Goucher on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., in the new Owings Mills Gymnasium where they have started the season with three-straight wins.
