No. 25 Salisbury Edges Stevenson on Penalty Kicks in CAC Semifinals

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury converted all five of its penalty kicks with the last coming from Justin Lambert as the No. 25 Sea Gulls won the shootout 5-3 to escape a third upset bid by Stevenson in the last three meetings in the semifinals of the CAC Men's Soccer Championship Wednesday at the SU Soccer Complex.

Despite the setback, the Mustangs (11-5-3) remained unbeaten in their last four and will now await seeding for the 2010 ECAC Division III South Championship to see if they will be making their second consecutive appearance.

A year ago, Stevenson advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC South Championship, finishing the season with 12 wins.

After a scoreless first half, sophomore Ansger Otto (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) gave Stevenson a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute with his CAC-leading 15th goal of the season off an assist from junior Chris Sokolis (Perry Hall/Perry Hall).

The Sea Gulls (12-3-4) avoided their third-straight loss to the Mustangs and a repeat of last year's 1-0 loss in the conference tournament semifinals on the same field when Pat Callahan tied the game in the 70th minute with his first goal of the season.

Junior Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) finished the game with seven saves, including five in the second half and two in the second overtime before giving way to sophomore Cory Spindler (Sykesville/Century) for the shootout.

Salisbury outshot Stevenson 20-10 for the game, including 14-5 in the second half, while holding a slim 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Sea Gulls will be making their 15th appearance in the title game in 17 years in the CAC and looking for their eighth conference championship, all since 1999. They will face a familiar foe in York (Pa.) after the Spartans scored two first half goals to down Mary Washington at home Wednesday, 2-0.

Saturday will mark the sixth time that the two teams have met to decide the conference champion.
