SALISBURY, Md. - The Stevenson women's volleyball team stormed out to a 14-point victory in the first set before rallying to force a fourth, but a five-point run during the decisive fifth set gave Salisbury a 11-25, 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 15-9 victory Tuesday night at the Maggs Physical Activities Center in the first round of the CAC Volleyball Championship.

With 25 victories, the Mustangs (25-8) will await the seedings for the 2010 ECAC Division III South Championship to see if they will be making their second postseason appearance in the last three seasons.

In 2008, Stevenson won a school record 32 games, hosting the ECAC South Championship and advancing to the semifinals.

Meanwhile, the third-seeded Sea Gulls (23-11) advance to the CAC semifinals where they will travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to face No. 2 seed Mary Washington on Thursday.

The Mustangs totaled nine kills with just one error for a.490 hitting percentage in the first set while posting a .375 hitting percentage with 14 kills in the fourth. However, in losing sets two and three, the team combined for 11 of its 20 attack errors with a .113 percentage.

Sophomore Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) totaled her 13th double double of the season and fourth in the last five games with 13 kills and 16 digs. She also had 12 of Stevenson's 20 attack errors.

Senior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) added 10 kills and five total blocks while freshman Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had a game-high 21 digs to lead five players who had at least 12. She also added three kills and 36 assists.

Junior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) had eight kills and 15 digs, junior Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) had 12 digs and freshman Samantha Shetterly (Elkridge/Mount de Sales) totaled 14 digs.
