TOWSON, Md. - Led by back-to-back double
doubles by sophomore Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck), the Stevenson women's volleyball team
posted consecutive 3-0 victories at the Goucher Family Weekend
Tournament Friday, downing Lancaster Bible 265-14, 25-22, 25-17 and
Marymount (Va.) 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 at Decker Gymnasium.
With two matches on Saturday, the Mustangs (18-3) need just two
more wins to post their fourth 20-win season out of the last
five.
Gabbard tied her season-high with 18 kills versus Marymount
(Va.), equaling her performance set in the team's 3-0 win versus
FDU-Florham on September 11. Her 18 kills were just one shy of her
career-high set at St. Mary's (Md.) on Oct. 24, 2009.
Gabbard also added 12 digs for her seventh double double of the
season and sixth in her last 10 games.
Playing in her hometown, junior Alexa Carney
(Towson/Towson) led Stevenson with 15 digs against the
Saints (7-14) while adding nine kills, both season-highs.
Freshman Jessica
Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had a career-high
40 assists to go along with four kills and seven digs while senior
Alex
Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) totaled nine kills and two
block assists.
As a team, the Mustangs posted a season-high 49 kills and a .312
hitting percentage.
In the opener versus Lancaster Bible, Gabbard totaled 12 kills
and 12 digs while Gieselman added six kills, 29 assists and 10
digs. Carney had 14 digs and Mercer had seven kills as Stevenson
posted its second win over the Chargers (11-13) in the last four
games.
The Mustangs conclude the tournament against FDU-Florham and
host Goucher on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. Stevenson has
already posted victories over both teams this season.
