YORK, Pa. - Hampered by 17 attack errors and
nine reception errors and eight service errors, the Stevenson
women's volleyball team lost its second consecutive CAC contest
Wednesday night, falling to York (Pa.) 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 at Wolf
Gymnasium.
The loss dropped the Mustangs (16-3, 2-2 CAC) to sixth place in
the conference standings with five games to play.
Meanwhile, the Spartans (18-1, 3-0 CAC) won its school record
18th-straight game and remained half-a-game behind Frostburg State
for second place in the CAC standings.
Senior Alex Mercer
(Eldersburg/Liberty) led Stevenson with 11 kills, but had
seven attack errors. Sophomore Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck) had six kills and four attack errors as
the team's top hitters combined for a .130 hitting percentage.
Juniors Brooke Gilley
(Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) and Kristen Lubeski
(Bishopville/Stephen Decatur) and freshman Jessica
Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) each had four
kills while Gieselman added 25 assists.
Junior Alexa Carney
(Towson/Towson) led the defense with 10 kills, followed by
seven from freshman Samantha
Shetterly (Elkridge/Mount de Sales) and six from
junior Amy Rudolph (North
East/Rising Sun).
Stevenson led 5-1 and 12-8 in the first set before York used a
7-1 run to take a 17-15 lead. The set featured two more ties at
17-17 and 19-19, but the Spartans scored the final six points to
take the set.
The second set was back-and-forth and neither team led by more
than three. The 14th and final tie came at 21-21 before York reeled
off four of the final five points
The Spartans trailed early in the third set, but after it was
tied at six apiece, they jumped out to a five-point advantage and
never gave it back.
Stevenson travels across town for four games at Goucher during
its Family Weekend Tournament Saturday and Sunday.
