OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the second-straight
year, the Stevenson men's soccer team stunned a nationally-ranked
Salisbury team as sophomore Ansger Otto
(Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) had a goal and an assist,
including the game-winner in the 88th minute to lead the Mustangs
to a 2-1 victory over the 17th-ranked Sea Gulls Wednesday at Caves
Athletics Complex.
Stevenson (8-3, 1-3 CAC) won its fifth game out of six at home
this season and its second against a top 20 opponent after its 1-0
win over No. 19 Montclair State on September 5.
Last year, the Mustangs stunned then-No. 16 Salisbury on the
road in the semifinals of the CAC Men's Soccer Championship, 1-0.
Stevenson has won the last two games in the series after going
winless in the first 11, posting an 0-9-2 record.
Salisbury (10-1-2, 4-1 CAC) had its 12-game unbeaten streak
snapped and suffered its first conference loss since Oct. 1, 2008,
a streak of 21 consecutive games.
The Sea Gulls took an early 1-0 lead when Mike Napolitano scored
his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 18th minute off an
assist from Stafford Chipungu who sent a cross into the box from
the right wing.
Salisbury held its one-goal advantage late in the second half
when tensions began to flare as the final 30 minutes featured six
yellow cards and one red card.
Stevenson freshman Josh Stover (West
Friendship/Marriotts Ridge) tied the game in the 62nd
minute off a through ball from Otto.
The goal was the first allowed by the Sea Gulls in 848 minutes
and sparked an eight-miute span in which the Sea Gulls were
whistled for three yellow cards, two of which resulted in a red and
ejection for Morgan Hunt, forcing Salisbury to play a man down for
the final 24:22.
Each team had two shots over the next 16 minutes, none of which
were on goal, before Otto took a throw in from junior Chris Sokolis
(Perry Hall/Perry Hall) and dribbled down the left side,
beating two defenders before sliding the ball into the far corner
under Salisbury keeper John Vnenchak.
Otto now has 32 points this season and currently leads the
nation, two ahead of Ramapo's Rob Santaniello who had 30 entering
Wednesday. Both are now tied atop Division III in goals.
Santaniello and the Roadrunners are in action on the road at Drew
Wednesday night.
Stevenson junior Ryan Flannelly
(Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) earned his seventh win of the
season after making one second half save while Vnenchak suffered
his first loss in seven starts and made two first half saves.
The Mustangs begin a four-game road trip on Saturday when they
travel to Rutgers-Camden. Game time is at 1:00 p.m. A year ago, the
Scarlet Raptors edged out a 1-0 decision on an own goal by
Stevenson in the 55th minute.
