Mustangs Rally to Post 3-2 Victory at Notre Dame (Md.)

BALTIMORE, Md. - Stevenson women's volleyball senior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) and sophomore Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) each totaled 14 kills, combining for exactly half of the Mustangs' total of 48 as they rallied from a 2-1 deficit to post a 25-9, 21-25, 16-25, 25-13, 15-11 victory over the College of Notre Dame (Md.) Tuesday at MBK Gymnasium.

The win was the third-straight for Stevenson (23-6) who totaled 20 of its 48 kills in the final two sets while rallying from an 8-6 deficit in the fifth set.

Gabbard also added 14 digs for her 10th double double of the season while junior Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) finished with 19 assists and a season-high 17 digs. Junior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) had 15 digs.

After sweepting the Gators back on September 1 in the first-ever game at the new Owings Mills Gymnasium in front of 1,034 fans, the Mustangs stormed out to a 16-point victory in the first set before Notre Dame caught fire.

The Gators (16-10) surprised Stevenson by taking the second and third sets after totaling 24 of their 45 kills while the Mustangs totaled 11 of their 17 attack errors.

With the fourth set tied at 5-5, Stevenson used a 16-6 run to take a commanding 21-11 advantage en route to a 12-point win. Gabbard totaled five kills in the set while freshman Kristin Steinnagel (Eldersburg/Liberty) totaled three of her career-high six.

Notre Dame took an 8-6 lead in the fifth and deciding set before the Mustangs scored nine of the final 12 points to pull out the 3-2 victory in their first five set game of the season.

Freshman Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had five kills, 22 assists, five service aces, nine digs and three block assists.

Catherine Subrizi led the Gators with 14 kills and 20 digs as she was one of five players to total at least 10 digs. Cory Santos had 25 digs to go along with seven kills. Margee Maresca had 13 kills and 11 digs.

Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts a crucial CAC contest with St. Mary's (Md.) at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
