OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's
volleyball senior Alex Mercer
(Eldersburg/Liberty) posted nine kills, three digs and
three total blocks to lead the Mustangs to a 25-12, 25-21, 25-16
CAC victory Tuesday on Senior Night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
With the win, the Mustangs (20-4, 3-2 CAC) posted their fourth
20-win season out of the last five and moved into a three-way tie
for fourth in the CAC standings behind Frostburg State, St. Mary's
(Md.) and York (Pa.).
St. Mary's (Md.) handed York (Pa.) a 3-0 loss at home tonight,
snapping the Spartans' 21-game win streak.
With nine kills, Mercer now has 995 for her career, 181 of which
have come this season.
Sophomore Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck) added eight kills and nine digs while
freshman Jessica
Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had three kills,
27 assists and seven digs.
Stevenson jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set,
capitalizing on six Blazer attack errors before crusing to the
13-point victory. Mercer and junior Alexa Carney
(Towson/Towson) each had four kills.
Carney also finished the game with four digs and a .444 hitting
percentage.
The Mustangs also jumped out to a quick 6-3 lead in the second
set that featured seven ties and five lead changes, but they scored
10 of the final 16 points to break a 15-15 tie and win by four to
take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Gabbard totaled six of her eight kills in the second set while
Hood (5-11, 0-6 CAC) had just five kills to go along with six
attack errors, three service errors and three reception errors.
In the third set, the Blazers took a 4-1 lead before an 11-1 run
by Stevenson gave it a seven-point advantage it would not let slip
below three the rest of the way en route to the nine-point
game-clinching victory.
Junior Amy Rudolph (North
East/Rising Sun) finished with six digs and five assists
and junior Jamie Krens (Owings
Mills/Franklin) added five digs. Freshman Stacey Rex
(Finksburg/Westminster) totaled two kills and four service
aces.
Kristina Staub and Brittany Lethbridge each had five kills for
Hood while Straub, Amy Hagerdorn and Chelsea Weaver all added seven
digs.
Stevenson has a week off before it returns to action next
Tuesday, October 19 when it look to avenge one of its four losses
this season against Mary Washington at home beginning at 7:00
p.m.
