Mustangs Split Final Two Games at Goucher Tournament

Box Score 1

FDU-Florham | Goucher

TOWSON, Md. - The Stevenson women's volleyball team totaled 52 kills and 90 digs, both season-highs, in a 21-25, 25-17, 25-16, 27-25 victory over Goucher Saturday as it managed a split on the final day of the Goucher Family Weekend Tournament after a 12-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-20 loss to FDU-Florham.

The Mustangs (19-4) posted their second victory over the Gophers in as many games this season while dropping a decision to the Devils after they posted a 3-0 win over them on September 11 at the Crimson Eagle Classic.

Senior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) led the way with 14 kills and five total blocks in the win against Goucher (5-15) and now has 986 career kills heading into Tuesday's home CAC contest with Hood on Senior Night.

Mercer was one of three Mustangs with at least 10 kills as junior Kristen Lubeski (Bishopville/Stephen Decatur) finished with 12, four shy of her career-high set versus New Jersey City on October 2, and sophomore Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) added 11.

Gabbard also had 17 kills, one short of her season-high, as she totaled her fourth-straight double double and ninth this season.

Junior Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) posted a career-high 30 digs, one-third of Stevenson's total and the most by a Mustang since sophomore Emilee Ceroy (Davidsonville/South River) also had 30 at Rowan on Oct. 17, 2009.

Freshman Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had 14 digs, one shy of her career-high, to go along with five kills and a career-high 43 assists while junior Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) had 11 digs.

Junior Jamie Krens (Owings Mills/Franklin) had four of the Mustangs' nine service aces while junior Brooke Gilley (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) had six kills and three total blocks.

Gabbard also had a double double with 12 kills and 14 digs versus FDU-Florham (21-6), but Stevenson was hampered by 26 attack errors and a .115 hitting percentage desite 20 total blocks.

Mercer had 11 kills while Carney totaled seven kills and a team-high 15 digs. Junior Jen Glock (Westminster/Westminster) led the Mustangs with five block assists with freshman Samantha Shetterly (Elkridge/Mount de Sales) adding 10 digs.

Game time between Hood and Stevenson is at 7:00 p.m., inside Owings Mills Gymnasium on Tuesday. Prior to the game, the Mustangs will honor Mercer and fellow senior Cassandra Auguste (Montgomery Village/Watkins Mill).
