OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Holly Rich scored her first
goal of the season with just 3:29 remaining in the game to lift
Delaware Valley to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Stevenson
Saturday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex in the Black Eyed
Susan Tournament.
Danielle Heyne led the Aggies (1-1) with a goal and an assist
while Bethany Pavlik, the team's assists leader with
11 a year ago, added her first of this season.
Neither team found the net in the first half where Mustang
junior Kara Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) totaled
all five of her saves. Delaware Valley held a 12-0 advantage in
shots in the opening half and an 8-0 margin in penalty
corners.
Despite being out-played statistically, Stevenson (0-2) struck
first on its first shot of the game less than four minutes into the
second half when senior Raechel Manly (Bel Air/Bel
Air) scored her seventh career goal and first since 2007
on a breakaway.
The goal was the first of the season for the Mustangs, but their
lead lasted just over eight minutes before Heyne tied the game with
her first off an assist from Pavlik.
Heyne later assisted scored her fifth career game-winning
goal to keep the Aggies unbeaten in two games this season. Keeper
Hollis Hancock also remained unbeated in her first two career
starts, totaling four saves.
Stevenson concludes play in the 2009 Black Eyed Susan Tournament
on Sunday against its second consecutive opponent from the MAC
Freedom Conference when it faces FDU-Florham at 12:30 p.m. The
Devils handed Notre Dame (Md.) a 4-0 loss at Caves on Saturday
morning.
