STEVENSON, Md. - Justine Jeter totaled a
game-high 21 kills to go along with 15 kills for her third double
double of the season to lead Gallaudet to a 3-1 victory over
Stevenson in a CAC contest Tuesday night at Student Union
Gymnasium, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.
The win was the fourth-straight for the Bison (8-6, 2-0 CAC) and
their sixth out of the last eight after they started the season
0-4.
Jeter, who was named CAC player of the week on Monday,
totaled a .233 hitting percentage and a staggering 60 attempts
with just seven errors. Amanda Krieger also had 15 kills for
Gallaudet as the duo combined for 36 of the team's 55 kills.
For the Mustangs (7-8, 1-2 CAC), junior Alex Mercer
(Eldersburg/Liberty) totaled 15 kills and an amazing .591
hitting percentage, committing just two errors in 22 attempts. She
was the lone player in double figures for Stevenson as freshman
Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) had nine.
Mercer also had five of Stevenson's 15 total blocks.
Gabbard had 43 attempts while finishing with 17 digs. She was
one of five Mustangs with at least 10 kills following sophomores
Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) and Amy
Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) who each had 18. Rudolph
also added 32 assists.
Neither team had a strong offensive performance despite the 93
combined kills as the two also totaled 49 errors. However, the
Bison held a slight edge with 55 kills and a .175 hitting
percentage compared to 38 kills and a .100 percentage for
Stevenson.
The Mustangs rallied from a 17-10 deficit in the first set by
winning 15 of the final 21 points to edge out a two-point victory
in a set that featured eight ties and five lead changes.
In the second set, Gallaudet again took an early lead at 15-11
before Stevenson tied it at 18-18, but the Bison pulled out a
five-point victory behind three kills from Jeter, two from Mari
Klassen and two Mustang errors.
Stevenson trailed by just one in the third set at 19-18
following a kill from sophomore Brooke Gilley (Bel Air/C.
Milton Wright) before two aces and two kills from Jeter
led the Bison to a 25-21 win and 2-1 set lead.
Gallaudet led by as many as eight in the fourth set before a
late rally by the Mustangs cut the lead to three at 24-21. However,
the Bison would seal the game on Krieger's 15th kill.
Stevenson travels to Lancaster, Pennsylvania this weekend for
three matches at the F&M Scramble beginning with Cabrini on
Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
