OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson field hockey
team rallied from a two-goal deficit with three unanswered goals,
but Mary Washington's Jackie Tait scored the tying goal and
game-winner in overtime as the Eagles escaped with a 4-3 victory
Saturday at Caves Athletics Complex.
The Mustangs (2-5, 0-3 CAC) were looking for their first victory
over Mary Washington in the last three meetings, since a 1-0 win at
home on Sept. 29, 2007.
Tait, who scored five points with two goals and one assist,
netted her first goal just 2:48 after Stevenson senior
Raechel Manly (Bel Air/Bel Air) scored her second
of the season to give the Mustangs their first lead five minutes
into the second half.
Manly's was the last of three consecutive goals in a span of
4:12 that gave Stevenson a 3-2 lead less than six minutes into the
second half.
Junior Katelyn Manocheh (Timonium/Maryvale
Prep) started the scoring only 1:43 into the half on a
penalty stroke after a Mary Washington defender was whistled for a
violation in the circle on a Mustang penalty corner.
Sophomore Kelli Battista (Elkridge/Long Reach)
followed with her first goal of the season just over two minutes
later on a redirect to tie the game before Manly gave the team a
brief lead.
After Tait tied the game, Mustang sophomore Megan
Sadowski (Fallston/Fallston), who entered the game at the
start of the second half, totaled five saves against 14
Eagle shots and three penalty corners to keep the game tied and
force overtime.
Junior Christie Greer (Bel Air/Bel Air) also
had two defensive saves.
However, after a Stevenson penalty corner to start overtime,
Tait found the back of the cage just three minutes in off an assist
from Heidi Sheehan to snap Mary Washington's two-game losing
streak.
Sadowski finished with five saves while junior Kara
Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) had two in the first half.
Chrissy Bowdren had two for the Eagles.
Stevenson will look for its first CAC win of the season on
Tuesday when it travels to Hood. Game time is at 4:30 p.m.
