OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A penalty stroke by
McDaniel's Amanda Pickard with 15:42 remaining in the game
proved to be the game-winner, breaking a scoreless tie and
snapping the Green Terror's three-game losing streak in a 2-0
victory over Stevenson Sunday afternoon at Caves Athletics Complex.
Meanwhile, the loss snapped a two-game win streak for the
Mustangs (2-3) and was just their fifth in the last 12 games at
home.
After an uneventful first half in which both teams combined for
just six shots and six penalty corners, McDaniel stepped up the
offensive pressure in the second, outshooting Stevenson 8-4 while
holding a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
However, the Mustang defense would withstand seven consecutive
penalty corners in the first 20 minutes before an illegal touch on
a defensive save was whistled against Stevenson, awarding a penalty
stroke to the Green Terror.
Pickard converted the penalty stroke for her third goal of the
season, beating Mustang junior Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) in the upper left.
McDaniel would add an insurance goal by Kaitlin Boerman that was
assisted by Jessica Largent in with less than eight minutes
remaining.
The Mustangs would get three penalty corners in the final six
minutes, but neither of their two shots would reach the cage.
Zimmerman finished with two saves while counterpart Stephanie
Thomson also had two.
Stevenson travels to York (Pa.) on Thursday for a CAC contest
beginning at 4:00 p.m.
