Box score

TOWSON, Md. - Megan Smith had a game-high 19 kills and Goucher totaled 94 digs, including 19 from Smith, as the Gophers posted their second win in the last three matches against Stevenson with a 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19 victory Thursday night at the Sports and Recreation Center.

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Mustangs (4-2) and was their second in four road matches this season.

Freshman Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) posted her second consecutive double double with a team-high 10 kills to go along with 11 digs. It was also her third match in six this season with at least 10 kills.

Gabbard was one of five Mustangs to have at least 10 digs, led by sophomore Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) who had 16, four shy of her season-high set on Saturday in the team's 3-2 win at Philadelphia Biblical.

Gabbard, sophomore Brooke Gilley (Bel Air/C. Milton Wright) and freshman Jenna Dean (Frederick/Thomas Johnson) each had 11 digs while sophomore Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun) 10 to go along with 32 assists, seven shy of her career set at Philadelphia Biblical.

Goucher (3-2) scored five of the final six points in the first set to break a 20-20 tie before a kill by Stevenson junior Alex Mercer (Eldersburg/Liberty) in the second broke a 17-17 and gave the Mustangs the lead for good en route to a four-point win.

The Gophers led 21-12 in the third set before holding on for a 25-21 win and then never trailed in the fourth, leading by as many as eight at 14-6. Smith then sealed the third-straight win for Goucher with back-to-back kills to end the match.

Mercer finished with nine kills while junior Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott Key) added seven.

Ashley Fan added 11 kills and a match-high 20 digs for the Gophers as she and Smith combined for 30 kills and 39 digs.

After six-straight matches on the road, Stevenson will make its 2009 home debut on Saturday with a quad match at Student Union Gymnasium. The Mustangs face Ursinus at 10:00 a.m., before taking on Virginia Wesleyan at noon and Catholic at 3:00 p.m.
